Gyros Cooking Class in Athens

A hands-on class that makes pita bread and gyros from scratch in Athens: what you cook, how it differs from souvlaki, and what is included.

Updated October 2026

There is a class in Athens for pita gyros alone: you make the pita dough, season and cook the gyros several ways, finish with a Greek dessert, and eat as much as you like with drinks included. It is the street-food alternative to the moussaka-and-pies classes, and it suits anyone who would rather learn the thing they eat most often in Greece.

Gyros or souvlaki?

They are often confused, and Athenians use both words loosely.

  • Souvlaki is meat (usually pork or chicken) cut into cubes, threaded onto skewers and grilled over charcoal. You can eat the skewers on a plate, or have the meat wrapped in a pita.
  • Gyros is meat stacked on a vertical spit, roasted as it turns, and shaved off in thin slices. Wrapped in a pita with tomato, onion, tzatziki and often a few chips, it is a pita gyros.

In Athens, asking for “a souvlaki” at a grill can get you either a skewer or a wrap, so say kalamaki for the skewer if you want to be precise.

The class

The pita gyros class with a local runs in a small kitchen in the centre of Athens, designed to feel like a home kitchen. Everything is made from scratch, with no ready-made ingredients: you make the dough for the pita bread, and learn to season and cook gyros five different ways. Dessert is a Greek sweet, either patsabouropita or a Greek-style cheesecake. Then you sit down and eat, with unlimited food and drinks, and take the recipes home. The class takes about three hours; come hungry.

Gyros class or a classic class?

A gyros class is narrow and deep: one dish, done properly, with the bread as the skill you take home. A classic Greek class is broad: four to six dishes, from tzatziki to a baked main and a pie. If you want to cook for friends at home afterwards, the broad class gives you a menu; if you want the taste of Athens street food in your own kitchen, the gyros class gives you that.

The market class is the classic class most people start with, and the dishes guide lists what each class cooks.

Where to eat gyros in Athens

Everywhere, and cheaply: it is one of the best-value meals in Europe. The streets around Monastiraki are full of grills, and neighbourhood souvlatzidika (souvlaki shops) all over the city do it as well or better for less. Eat it standing up, from the paper.

Written 25 October 2026. Class details, inclusions, price and rating come from the GetYourGuide listing, read 25 October 2026, and change over time. Gyros and souvlaki definitions are standard Greek usage.
